Cold, Rankin-sense and Mirth

January 27, 2008

There are many of us still sittin’ around
We don’t understand each other
Which is more than a thought,
It’s tied and it’s bound

Can’t be “I thought”
It’d be “Us all along”
Ain’t got no qualms about
the roads we took, but I could be wrong
I could be wrong, I could be wrong

Well I’m on Green Street still unfinished
Sometimes I live with you
I’ve seen all those movies
When it turns out to be true
When I’m gone, when I’m gone,
When I’m gone, no one will tell me that I’m wrong

Of all of the titles that we could be called
It was all a dream I had before I went and got this old
Can’t be “I thought”
It’d be “Us all along”
Ain’t got no qualms about
the roads we took, but I could be wrong
I could be wrong, I could be wrong

Well I’m on Green Street still unfinished
Sometimes I live with you
Sometimes I live with you
Sometimes I live with you
Sometimes I live with you

Never promises, rather my… my hopes and dreams
I’d write it down if I could figure out what it all means
Can’t be “I thought”
It’d be “Us all along”
Ain’t got no qualms about
the roads we took, but I could be wrong
I could be wrong, I could be wrong

Well I’m on Green Street still unfinished
Sometimes I live with you
I’ve seen all those movies
When it turns out to be true
When I’m gone, when I’m gone,
When I’m gone, no one will tell me that I’m wrong

Green Street (Still Unfiinished) – Rock, Paper, Scissors

This time the lyrics come from a friend of Jon Kindred’s named Irwin. They had a studio band called “Rock, Paper, Scissors” and they put down some of my favorite “songs done by someone I know” tunes ever. Right up there with Mitch’s Christmas EP. Irwin is now a professor at the University of Wisconsin working with plant genetics, disease, drought resistant soybeans… you know, that whole “help feed the world” nonsense. Since R, P, S never did anything outside of the studio (that I know of), I haven’t got a website and YouTube video to link with like I normally do. So instead I’ve linked both the song title and the group name to my MediaMax download account where you can download MP3s of all six songs from their debut EP!!!

Hmmmm, where to start, where to start. Seems like ages ago I was wishing everyone Happy Holidays and hoping my Christmas travel would be trouble free. Today I’m enjoying the sunshine and 60 degree temperature here in Southeast Denver.

Christmas travel home proved to be snowy and icy. My time home was relaxing and enjoyable however. The traditional Christmas Eve “Christmas-carol-sing-a-long-and-bite-the-heads-off-reindeer-fete” was cozy with snacks and drinks and a mischievous Reece sneaking chips from under the coffee table. Net discovered the wonders of the Botanical Garden’s snowflake glasses and Mitch provided accompaniment on his Taylor 12 string.

Mom, Jeff and the family are all doing well. There are now little ones around the house for Christmas which always makes things more fun. I’m smiling right now remembering Levi, who’s all of 2 years old, ripping the paper off his presents with reckless abandon and exclaiming, “Oh my gosh!” with every treasure revealed 🙂 .

On the way home, the Rodeo started “missing” and I got lousy mileage all the way back. I finally took it to a mechanic and $1000 later it was running as good as ever. I miss Wally World though. You could always count on Wally for a good price and an honest opinion whether you asked for it or not.

I was offered a job right after I got back from the holidays, but I ended up not taking it. The folks at ListenUp decided that they could, in fact, rearrage my schedule a bit and not have me out programming all over the front range after I sat down and discussed it with them. We decided on a course of action and I’ve been spending more time in the office lately. I guess we’ll see how long it lasts next time they run short on programmers, but for now I’m happy.

image002-tweaked.jpgMitch, Laura and I went out for the first time skiing and snowboarding a couple of weekends ago. I’ve been putting it off all season since I’ve gained weight and fallen out of the “going to the gym” routine. That was part of the problem with me programming all the time at work. I’d come home tired after an hour on the road after work and not feel up to going to the gym. In any case, we headed out to Keystone where Mitch and Laura proceeded to ski all over the mountain and have a great time. I on the other hand, managed to make it down a single 3.5 mile green run and then sit in the bar for the rest of the day. I was sore for three days afterwards and am now more determined than ever to get back to the gym. On the up side, Mitch found the happiest slice of onion ever when we had lunch. The picture came from my cell phone and I had to tweak the crap out of it to get it to look presentable. I wonder, does anyone have a cell phone that actually takes good pictures?

I also made it out to see Asleep at the Wheel with Greg and Amanda a while back. They played at a place called the Soiled Dove, a great venue that seats around 300 or so. Plus, it’s just down the road from me, so I’ll have to keep an eye out for bands I’d like to see. Manda knew the girlfriend of one of the guys in the opening act and we managed to get a table front and center. What a great show. If you’ve never heard or seen them, the lead singer, Ray, is about 9 feet tall with a voice as big as he is. They had a kid with them playing fiddle who was pretty amazing, but looked really young. I leaned over and said, “It’s great that Elijah Wood could find work after Lord Of The Rings” which cracked us up.

dscn1658-sized.jpgThe only other news I guess is that I decided to buy a new, used car. Remember how I mentioned dumping $1000 into the Rodeo? Well, a week or so ago it started making a clicking sound that sounded like something had gotten caught in the fan. The report from the mechanic is that it sounds like it has a rod that’s dying or something like that. He said the fix is to replace the engine with a refurbished one at $2K ~ $3K and I said, “yeah, that’s not gonna happen.” When I asked him what would happen when it finally gave up the ghost, he told me that it would probably start making noise and then just stop running. To which I said, “so basically, make sure I have a fully charged cell phone whenever I drive it?” “Yeah,” was his reply.

That’s the news from this end of the world. I hope things are well with everyone out there. Write me if you get a chance and I’ll try and do the same. To Knox and Kimber and Brian, no, I haven’t forgetten about your Christmas presents, I’ve just been lazy. I hope to remedy that shorty 🙂 . Hope you all had a happy Robert Burn’s birthday!
